Switzerland stuns France in Euro 2020 upset
Swiss come from behind to win 3-2 in Bucharest
Switzerland pulled off a major upset in the Euro 2020 round of 16, defeating world champions France 3-2 in Bucharest on Monday.
The Swiss, who had not beaten France in a competitive match since 1992, took the lead through Haris Seferovic in the 15th minute. Karim Benzema equalized for France in the 55th minute, but Switzerland regained the lead through Xherdan Shaqiri just four minutes later.
France again drew level through Paul Pogba in the 75th minute, but Switzerland would not be denied. Mario Gavranovic scored the winning goal in the 90th minute to send Switzerland into the quarterfinals.
The victory is a major upset for France, who were the favorites to win the tournament. It is also a major boost for Switzerland, who are now one of the favorites to reach the semifinals.
Switzerland will face Spain in the quarterfinals on Friday.
