The First National Day of Prayer
In 1988, the United States Congress passed Public Law 100-307, designating the first Thursday in May as the National Day of Prayer. This law was enacted to call upon all Americans to come together in prayer for our nation, its leaders, and its people.
Light of the World
The theme for the 2024 National Day of Prayer is "Light of the World." This theme is inspired by the words of Jesus in the Gospel of John: "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life" (John 8:12).
As we gather in prayer on this day, let us reflect on the words of Jesus and his promise to be a source of light and hope in our lives. Let us also pray for our nation and its leaders, that they may be guided by wisdom and compassion.
A Time for Unity
The National Day of Prayer is a time for all Americans to come together in unity. Regardless of our religious beliefs or political affiliations, we can all find common ground in prayer.
